At the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies, RNs will find a variety of online programs to fit their schedules and meet their long-term career goals.

We offer a comprehensive range of nursing degrees that often take a hybrid approach to ensure you graduate with the highest level of education. Our highly ranked programs are readily accessible and faculty are eager to help you advance your career. Below are online degree options available through UMKC.

 

RN-BSN

The track is ideal for an RN who wants to fulfill the increasing demand for nurses to be baccalaureate prepared, in a dynamic healthcare environment.  A BSN degree will build on the student’s previous education as a basis for developing clinical, community, technological, inter-professional collaborative skills, and leadership skills.  The program is designed to hone the professional development of RNs to become leaders, managers, coordinators, advocates and designers of care.

 

MSN (Master of Science in Nursing)

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGNP)

The AGNP track prepares students for advanced practice nursing in the primary healthcare of adults through an online-hybrid program.  This role provides a wide range of health services from acute, chronic and wellness care to health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling.

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

The FNP track prepares students for advanced practice of nursing in the primary healthcare of children and adults, across the life span, through an online-hybrid program.  This role provides a wide range of health services from acute, chronic and wellness care to health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)

The NNP track educates leaders in newborn healthcare.  This online program is focused on health management of neonates and their families and prepares neonatal nurse practitioners to manage both critically and chronically ill neonates.

Nursing Educator (NE)

The online-hybrid program is completed online.  A graduate degree as a Nurse Educator prepares you for a leadership role in academia, staff development and the community, preparing nurse educators to employ cutting-edge teaching strategies in the didactic and clinical setting, synthesize teaching and learning theories and acquire skills in curriculum development.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

The online-hybrid program allows professionals a flexible study schedule but also provides a chance to collaborate with a cohort.  The PMHNP track allows students to provide a full range of psychiatric services to patients.  Our graduates work in outpatient mental health clinics, psychiatric emergency services, private practice and hospitals.  They also provide primary mental healthcare that involves continuous and comprehensive services necessary to improve mental health, prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders and health maintenance.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP/AC PNP)

The PNP emphasis area prepares students for advance practice nursing in the care of infants, children, and adolescents.  Clinical experiences are conducted with preceptors in community or outpatient settings for primary care and in an acute care setting for the post-MSN acute care PNP.

*PNP Applicants: A minimum of one-year, full-time equivalent clinical experience within the past three years is required for admission.

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)

The WHNP track prepares students for advanced practice nursing in the management of gynecological, prenatal, and primary care of women.  This role provides a wide range of health services from acute, chronic and wellness care to health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling.

 

Post-MSN Certificate

This post-master’s professional certificate program will prepare nurse educators to employ cutting-edge teaching strategies in the didactic and clinical setting, synthesize teaching/learning theories, and acquire skills in curriculum development.

New or Second Nurse Practitioner Role

Already have your Master of Science in Nursing and want to continue your education? If you are currently a certified advanced practice nurse and want to complete the requirements for a second new NP role, or don’t have an NP certification but want to complete the NP courses to sit for certification, we have several options for you to consider: Adult Gerontology, Primary Care Pediatric, Acute Care Pediatric, Psychiatric Mental Health, Women's Health, Neonatal, & Family.

 

Post-BSN to DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice)

Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGNP)

Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ACPNP)

Acute Care PNP: The acute care pediatric nurse practitioner (AC PNP) focuses on restorative care that is characterized by rapidly changing clinical conditions.  The AC PNP provides care for patients with unstable chronic, complex acute, and critical conditions most times in an acute care facility.

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) track operated by University Health Truman Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia in collaboration with the UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies prepares students for advanced practice nursing in the delivery of all forms of anesthesia care throughout the lifespan.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP)

Post MSN Advanced Practice DNP

Intended for master’s prepared nurses certified in Advanced Practice (APRN) roles seeking to complete the DNP degree including certified Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Anesthetists, and Nurse Midwives.

Post-Master’s Advanced Practice DNP (returning for 2nd NP role and DNP)

Appropriate for master’s prepared APRN nurses returning for coursework to obtain a second NP role along with the DNP.

Post-Master’s Leadership DNP (without advanced practice certification)

Appropriate master’s preparation can include Nursing Leadership (Administration), Nursing Informatics, Public Health, Clinical Research Management, or others.  National certification in the area is preferred not required.

Nursing PhD

BSN-PhD

The majority of the hybrid program is completed online except for a hands-on research class held for up to four days each summer during your first two years on the UMKC campus. Post-BSN students are required to take 12 credit hours of master's level coursework prior to beginning 61 hours of PhD coursework.

MSN-PhD

Learn independently with this online-hybrid program. The majority of the hybrid program is completed online except for a hands-on research class held for up to four days each summer during your first two years on the UMKC campus.
