Laura Thiem joined the UMKC faculty in 2014 teaching advanced health assessment, clinical practicum along with other clinical courses in the FNP and PMHNP programs. Laura completed her DNP with a minor in Nursing Education at University of Missouri-Columbia in 2016. Previously, she had completed a MSN FNP at Old Dominion University in 1995. Subsequently she completed a post-Master’s program in the adult PMHCNS/NP program at University of Missouri-Columbia in 2007. Laura is ANCC certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She is certified by National League for Nursing as a Certified Nurse Educator. She has practiced in federally recognized Rural Health Clinics since 1996, owning and operating her own practice from 2006 to 2014. Her DNP project focuses on the use of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire to improve screening for mental health disorders in adolescents in the primary care setting. She is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), Missouri Nurses Association (MONA), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), National League for Nursing (NLN) and Sigma Theta Tau (STTI) Nursing Honor Society.
