TEAS

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is designed to evaluate the academic readiness of candidates prior to admission into the nursing program. The results also provide documentation useful for counseling and advisement. This examination also assesses the candidate’s ability to respond and apply knowledge to new situations and to understand complex technical material and relationships. These scores will be used as part of the application process and will in no way be the sole criteria for determining entrance into the clinical major. Please visit the TEAS website for more information.

Students who are NOT applying to the UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies may also take the TEAS at UMKC, however they will have to pay a fee to take the test, and also arrange through www.atitesting.com to pay to have their official scores sent to the school they are applying to.

How do I register to take the TEAS?

Students who read the instructions below say it is an easy process, so please read the following instructions carefully. If problems arise, please email gardnerma@umkc.edu for assistance.

If you have never taken the TEAS test, please visit the following link: https://pickatime.com/client?ven=11608412. Once you’ve opened it, you will see a “Login/Create Account” screen.

  • Enter your UMKC email address (if you don’t have one, use your current email address) and a password of your choice.
  • You will be asked for more contact information. Please fill in all spaces if possible: you will need your UMKC 8 digit student ID if you have one (if you don’t, leave it blank), your phone number, and whether you’re planning to apply to UMKC’s Nursing program. Please do not forget any of this information!
  • Press okay and you will be taken to the appointment screen; this will show the available time slots in blue. The system will make you choose a time that’s at least 48 hours from the time you’re scheduling the appointment, so trying to make last-minute appointments won’t work for you.
  • Select the slot that will work for you. Once you have made your appointment you will receive a confirmation email. You can also ask for a reminder email the day before your appointment.
  • If you need to cancel or change your appointment, simply log back in and change your appointment—don’t worry about having to cancel, but it won’t let you do it if you try to cancel less than 48 hours before your appointment so try to cancel as soon as you know. If you absolutely must make a last-minute cancellation, please email gardnerma@umkc.edu and let me know.
  • Be sure and write your appointment time down – while you should get a reminder email if you signed up for one, you don’t want to double book.
  • Please make sure that you arrive early the day of the test, which is in Room 3309 of the Health Sciences Building, 2464 Charlotte, Kansas City, MO 64108.

If you have taken the TEAS before and are only interested in a re-take, please email gardnerma@umkc.edu and indicated that you wish to re-take the TEAS test. There is an $80 fee (cash or check) for the re-take. The re-take session is:

  • Friday, March 13th, 8:30 a.m., room 3309

Ideally you will bring nothing with you. Paper and pencils will be supplied. You may not take calculators; all books and back packs and cell phones will need to be left at the front of the room (we are not responsible for lost articles). Please remember that this is a 4 hour test, those showing up AFTER the designated start time will not be allowed to test.

In the event of inclement weather, the test will only be cancelled if UMKC cancels classes or closes. Please look for this on the news report the morning of the test. You will have the option of testing at any of the other sessions, should this occur.

STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT TAKEN N101 (Introduction to Nursing) at the UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies will be required to bring a check, money order, or cash in the amount of $80 to pay for the testing fee. This fee is waived for students who have taken N101 as it was assessed as part of their course fees.

What if I’ve already taken the TEAS?

If you took the TEAS elsewhere, enclose a copy of results in your application packet

What if I haven’t taken the TEAS?

Pre-Nursing students enrolled in N101 will be assessed the Educational Fee which will enable you to take the TEAS during the semester you enroll. Thus, if you’re scheduled for N101 in the spring, you will be assessed an Educational Fee at that time which will make you eligible to take the TEAS. Or, if you took N101 in a previous semester or year, you were already assessed the fee and are eligible to take the TEAS. If you don’t take the TEAS, your application packet will NOT be reviewed.

What if I already took N101 or was granted an equivalency for that course?

If you already took N101, your fees for the TEAS were paid as part of the cost of the course. You just need to take the TEAS and do your best. Students granted equivalency for the course need to inform Judy Jellison by e-mail.

May I retake the TEAS?

Yes, you may retake the TEAS test for an $80 fee.

How do I study for the TEAS?

The TEAS is similar to the ACT. There will be four sections; Mathematics, Reading, Science, and English and Language Usage. For more information, please visit the TEAS Web site.

What if I want to send my TEAS score to other universities in addition to UMKC?

For information on sending scores to other Institutions, please visit the ATI website.
