Pre-licensure BSN program
The UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies offers a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN-PL) program that has been granted full approval by the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Students apply to the School of Nursing & Health Studies and begin pre-nursing courses (under the BHS Health Sciences pre-nursing sub-plan) in their freshman year and 76 students are subsequently admitted to the clinical major (BSN pre-licensure). Clinical experiences begin in the first semester of the sophomore year with 1200 clock hours throughout the program.
Students have clinical experiences at institutions with diverse clients in both urban and suburban settings, ranging from clients in immigrant populations to large private, public, and teaching hospitals. Simulations with high fidelity human simulators are integrated throughout the curriculum to provide students with the opportunity to learn in a safe environment prior to providing patient care. The curriculum prepares students to succeed as nurses in the management of health and includes complex problem solving, nursing leadership and management skills in addition to clinical experiences. The BSN-PL track requires 128 credit hours for graduation, including an internship.
