Graduate Admissions

MSN/DNP Program Admission Requirements

  • BSN or MSN from a college or university nationally recognized by a nursing accrediting agency (CCNE or AACN).
  • The GPA required for admission is a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (calculated on the last 60 hours of their BSN degree) or a minimum of 3.2 for their MSN.
  • Current unencumbered Missouri licensure or unencumbered licensure in the state in which the student completes clinical requirements.
  • The following two courses are pre-requisites to progression in the MSN and DNP program; however they can be taken at UMKC along with your program of study in the first semester (it is strongly recommended to complete prior to applying);
    • Graduate level statistics course with a minimum grade of B.
    • A free-standing undergraduate health assessment course which needs to be completed in the first summer or fall semester with a minimum grade of B.
  • Personal interviews are required

Post-MSN (or DNP) Certificate Admission Requirements:

  • MSN or DNP from a college or university nationally recognized by a nursing accrediting agency (CCNE or AACN)
  • The GPA required for admission is a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Current unencumbered licensure in the state in which the student completes clinical requirements.
  • The following are the common pre-requisite graduate level coursework to be completed prior to or as part of the certificate program of study. These courses may be from your MSN/DNP graduate program or completed at UMKC with your certificate hours:
    • Advanced Pathophysiology Across the Lifespan
    • Advanced Pharmacology/Applied Pharmacology Across the Lifespan
    • Advanced Health Assessment Across the Lifespan
    • Diagnostic Reasoning for the APRN
    • Health Promotion
  • Personal interviews may be requested.

MSN, DNP & Post-MSN Certificate Application Instructions

Please make sure that you review the application instructions for the track you are interested in. They may require additional materials or contain special instructions. All completed application materials are due by 5:00 pm on the following dates:

  • October 15th for early decision/acceptance to start coursework in January or June
  • February 15th (for regular acceptance) to start coursework in June
  • June 10th (Fall start for Nurse Educator & Post-MSN Certificates ONLY) to start coursework in August

The application to the MSN, DNP & Post-MSN Certificate programs is a two-step process, applicants must:

1. Submit the online UMKC Application and submit official transcripts from each institution attended to:

2. Submit program application and materials through NursingCAS to UMKC’s School of Nursing and Health Studies by deadline stated above. Please review the NursingCAS website for the list of programs offered at UMKC’s School of Nursing and Health Studies.
Required Supplemental Application Materials:

    • $25 nursing application fee. Applicants can pay this fee electronically, or by check or money order.
      • To submit an electronic payment, please visit the following link:  http://sonhs.umkc.edu/appfee
      • To submit a check or money order by mail or in person, please make the check out to UMKC and mail or drop off at:

    • Current resume reflecting all experiences as an RN
      • NE and PMHNP Applicants: two years of RN experience is preferred.
      • NNP Applicants: experience required must be the equivalent of 2 years of full-time RN practice experience within the last 5 years in the care of critically ill newborns or infants in intensive care inpatient settings is required before a student begins the clinical courses. The majority of the clinical experience should be in a Level III and/or IV NICU. Students may enroll in preclinical courses while obtaining the necessary practice experience.
      • PNP Applicants: A minimum of one-year, full-time equivalent clinical experience within the past three years is required for admission.
      • WHNP Applicants: A minimum of two years full-time equivalent clinical experience within the past three years is strongly recommended for admission.
    • Three evaluation forms are required from:
      • Immediate supervisor
      • Faculty professor from the last year of your BSN program or if post-masters applicant, faculty professor from MSN program.
      • Professional reference able to assess your professional characteristics.  No references from co-workers or family members will be accepted.
      • NNP Applicants: ONLY the NNP Reference Form submitted from either the Neonatal Medical Director or NNP Director at the NICU where you work is required.  Submit NNP Reference Form to:

    • Personal Statement of your professional goals (specific to the role/track to which you are applying) and how this program will help you achieve them (required length: one page maximum)
    • RN Licensure. A hard copy of the nursing license AND/OR a copy of NURSYS confirmation of current RN licensure. Copy must be clear and readable. Your nursing license must remain unencumbered throughout the program.
    • Clinical Professional Requirements. Submit criminal background check, drug screen, and required immunizations to Verified Credentials (to be completed once the admission offer has been extended to the applicant).

Important Information

*Distance education students who live, work and practice away from the Kansas City area must have an unencumbered license in the state where they complete their clinical rotations.
**Students in the KC area: Adult and Family tracks ONLY are required to be licensed in Kansas and Missouri.

 

PhD Program Admission Requirements

  • BSN, MSN or RN-MSN from a regionally accredited college or university accredited by a nationally recognized nursing accrediting agency (CCNE or AACN).
  • The GPA required for admission is a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (calculated on the last 60 hours of the BSN degree) or a minimum of 3.2 for the MSN.
  • Current unencumbered Missouri licensure or unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in the jurisdiction where study is to be conducted. The license must remain unencumbered throughout the program.
  • GRE results, recommended but not required
  • For BSN-PhD applicants: the following courses are pre-requisite requirements and must be completed with a grade of 3.0 or better: 1) N5550 or MSN theory equivalent course; 2) N5555 or MSN research equivalent course; 3) N5527 or MSN cultural diversity equivalent course; and 4) N5528 or MSN policy, politics & ethics equivalent course.
