Graduate Admissions

Program Admission Requirements

  • BSN or MSN from a college or university nationally recognized by a nursing accrediting agency (CCNE or AACN).
  • The GPA required for admission is a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (calculated on the last 60 hours of their BSN degree) or a minimum of 3.2 for their MSN.
  • Current unencumbered Missouri licensure or unencumbered licensure in the state in which the student completes clinical requirements.
  • The following two courses are pre-requisites to progression in the MSN and DNP program; however they can be taken at UMKC along with your program of study in the first semester (it is strongly recommended to complete prior to applying);
    • Graduate level statistics course with a minimum grade of B.
    • A free-standing undergraduate health assessment course which needs to be completed in the first summer or fall semester with a minimum grade of B.
  • Personal interviews are required

MSN & DNP Application Instructions

Please make sure that you review the application instructions for the track you are interested in.  They may require additional materials or contain special instructions.  All completed application materials are due by 5:00 pm on the following dates:

  • October 15th (for early decision/acceptance) to start coursework January or June
  • Completed applications that are received between February 15th and March 27th will be reviewed and considered for the Summer or upcoming semesters.
  • NE Program is rolling admissions

To complete the application process, applicants must:

2. Submit official transcripts from each institution attended to:

4. There is a $25 nursing application fee due with your Program Supplemental Application documents. Please submit a check or Money Order made out to UMKC for $25

5. Signed Personal Responsibility Form

6. Current resume reflecting all experience as an RN

  • NE and PMHNP Applicants: two years of RN experience is preferred.
  • NNP Applicants: experience required must be the equivalent of 2 years of full-time RN practice experience within the last 5 years in the care of critically ill newborns or infants in intensive care inpatient settings is required before a student begins the clinical courses. The majority of the clinical experience should be in a Level III and/or IV NICU. Students may enroll in preclinical courses while obtaining the necessary practice experience.
  • PNP Applicants: A minimum of one-year, full-time equivalent clinical experience within the past three years is required for admission.
  • WHNP Applicants: A minimum of two years full-time equivalent clinical experience within the past three years is strongly recommended for admission.

7. Three Reference Forms are required from:

  • Immediate supervisor
  • Faculty professor from the last year of your BSN program or if post-masters applicant, faculty professor from MSN program.
  • Professional reference able to assess your professional characteristics.  No references from co-workers or family members will be accepted.
  • **NNP Applicants: only the NNP Reference Form submitted from either the Neonatal Medical Director or NNP Director at the NICU where you work is required.

8. Personal Statement of your professional goals (specific to the role/track to which you are applying) and how this program will help you achieve them (required length: one page maximum)

9. A hard copy of the nursing license AND/OR a copy of NURSYS confirmation of current RN licensure. Copy must be clear and readable. Your nursing license must remain unencumbered throughout the program.

10. Copy of current unencumbered registered nursing license verification.  Copy must be clear and readable.

11. Satisfactory criminal background check (completed once the admission offer has been extended to the applicant).

Submit all Program Supplemental Application documents found on the NursingCAS website for the specified program at UMKC’s School of Nursing & Health Studies by the deadline stated above.  The list of programs that we offer can be found at: http://www.nursingcas.org/.

*Distance education students who live, work and practice away from the Kansas City area must have an unencumbered license in the state where they complete their clinical rotations.

**Students in the KC area: Adult and Family tracks only are required to be licensed in Kansas and Missouri.

PhD Application Instructions

Application Deadline

Completed applications that are received between February 15th and March 27th will be reviewed and considered for the Summer or upcoming semesters.

    1. All materials must be submitted prior to February 1 for a summer start
    2. Make application to our program through NursingCAS.*
    3. Three Reference Forms are required from:
      • Immediate supervisor
      • Faculty professor from the last year of your BSN program or if post-masters applicant, faculty professor from MSN program. If unable to contact faculty from previous school program (because of length of time from graduation) please provide two professional references as referred to below.
      • Professional reference able to assess your professional characteristics. No references from co-workers or family members will be accepted.
